Personal and Ethical Foundations

"Involves the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to develop and maintain integrity in one’s life and work; this includes thoughtful development, critique, and adherence to a holistic and comprehensive standard of ethics and commitment to one’s own wellness and growth" (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p.12).

  • "Articulate key elements of one’s set of personal beliefs and commitments (e.g., values, morals, goals, desires, self-definitions), as well as the source of each (e.g., self, peers, family, or one or more larger communities)" (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p. 16).

    • The self-reflection papers I have completed during my time as a graduate student at Bowling Green State University have enabled me to confidently articulate my beliefs, commitments and values.  Throughout the first three semesters of the program, I submitted monthly reflections as part of a CSP 6890: Supervised Field Experience in College Student Personnel course requirement.  In these assignments, I had a regular outlet to reflect on my graduate school experience as well as how I was coming to understand my professional values, goals and commitments.  Further, as part of the CSP 6050: Capstone Seminar course, I completed the Personal Statement of Mission statement paper.  In this paper, I reflected on how I became involved with student affairs, my personal values (and the sources and consequences of each) and my professional values (and the sources and consequences of each).

  • "Articulate awareness and understanding of one’s attitudes, values, beliefs, assumptions, biases, and identity how they affect one’s integrity and work with others" (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p. 16).

    • I was best able to articulate an awareness and understanding of how my attitudes, biases and identity influence collaboration and my integrity in my CSP 6035:  Multicultural Competence in Student Affairs critical reflection assignments.  These reflection papers tasked me to identify privileged and oppressed identities that affect how I interact in society.
